Log X-ray technology brings a significant improvement in productivity

With log X-ray technology there is less waste in production, and the result is more consistent quality. Behind the scanners produced by Finnos is artificial intelligence, which combines the data obtained from the scanning devices. The use of scanners and software offers significant improvements in raw material savings, quality yield and productivity in the sawmill, pulp, energy and plywood industries alike.

What does log scanning mean?

Scanning is about log X-ray technology. In short, it is a scanning system installed at the sawmill. Finnos, the world-leading Finnish company specialising in log X-ray scanning, develops this technology and delivers its solutions globally. The core business of Finnos is technology design, equipment manufacturing, application development and continuous maintenance.

An essential part of log X-ray technology is versatile software that analyses the scanned data and integrates excellently with production control and other information systems. The system includes 3D and X-ray modules, which can be installed in stages or simultaneously. For example, the Finnos Fusion log scanner combines advanced laser and X-ray scanning technologies in one compact unit.

Log and board scanners use AI technology. AI has been used to create software in which, through object detection and image processing, the AI has been taught to look for various defects, knots and other features in the log that affect the sawing and quality of the log.

This is cutting-edge technology. Comparable AI-based software is not yet widely used for the benefit of the sawmill industry anywhere in the world. Finnos has so far aimed the furthest in this, and got the furthest. The strategy is to develop scanning equipment to support the sawmill's entire process. At its best, the combination of scanning equipment and software works as a comprehensive source of information and gives the user the opportunity to see in real time how the sawmill is doing.

It is especially important to get the different scanners to communicate with each other. In log X-ray scanners and board scanners, scanning accuracy is particularly valued.

Where can scanning be used?

As a technology, scanning has long been a well-known method in Europe. Scanners were originally designed for scanning logs at sawmills. In addition, scanners are used on sawlines. The installation of the scanning equipment is always adapted locally to the needs of the sawmill.

In Finland, log X-ray technology has been developed determinedly for a long time. Finnos has decades of accumulated expertise and experience in the field. Our people understand what scanning is used for at a sawmill, so that the best possible end result is guaranteed from the customer's point of view.

One example is the Finnos Optimizer system, which selects the best setup for the log and rotates the log into the right position. The rotation makes use of the log's internal quality and geometry, such as sweep. Combining the systems and scanners makes it possible to introduce fingerprint technology, which can be used to identify and remove production bottlenecks and make the sawmill's processes more efficient.

In addition to logs and sawlines, X-ray equipment is also well suited to scanning the wood raw material of pulp and paper mills. The pulp and energy industries in particular benefit from the chip analyser. A system based on several scanning technologies offers an alternative to the typical sampling-based methods. The complete solution enables a new way of making energy production and pulp manufacturing more efficient.

Precise scanning technology is also used in the plywood industry. Finnos has developed a technique that enables millimetre-accurate cutting optimisation for the needs of the plywood industry, also taking into account the volume of the resulting veneer bolt. This system too is modular and can be expanded, for example with X-ray technology, as needs grow, so that the development of the mill's operations is possible on an ongoing basis.

The benefits of scanning

From the point of view of costs and efficiency, it is fundamental that the sawmill gets the correct sorting result for the wood arriving at the sawmill. Wood as a raw material is therefore worth scanning.

Scanning technology has fundamentally been developed to improve operational efficiency and profitability. Log X-ray solutions guarantee the user overwhelmingly better efficiency compared with traditional technology. The payback period of the investment remains remarkably short even at smaller sawmills when scanning technology is put to effective use.

It is significant that with the information produced by scanning, logs can be paid for on the basis of quality. Fair compensation for the forest owner selling the logs is in the interest of both parties and supports profitable long-term customer relationships.

With the use of scanning technology, the production of the sawmill or mill can be steered against the order book in an optimal way. This helps develop operations from the point of view of efficiency and capacity without slow or expensive interruptions.

From the employee's point of view, the benefit is a significantly more pleasant and functional working environment in wood sorting. The faster and more efficiently support from the supplier to the operator works, the better employees are able to solve problems and prevent waste or production interruptions. Finnos has arranged the customer's support service so that the operator can contact the on-call service 24 hours a day and get an immediate answer to their problem.
