The latest Finnos log scanner was installed at Stora Enso's Varkaus sawmill at the end of August. The project involved replacing an old log scanner with a new one. The previous scanner was already 20 years old, and it was time to invest in modern technology and bring the scanner into this millennium.
Stora Enso has previously received five Fusion log scanners and EROP operator chairs, for example at the Uimaharju and Honkalahti sawmills. The Finnos log scanner was chosen for Varkaus because the experiences with the earlier scanners had been good.
The benefits of the log scanner are easy to demonstrate. The financial impact is the most important factor. Primarily, Stora Enso sought an improvement in recovery rate through the scanner replacement, in other words a better margin for the operation.
Furthermore, the information produced by the log scanners can be used to reduce losses. The X-ray scanner also performs strength grading, so added value is gained for the end product right from log sorting onwards.
From an installation point of view, a new log scanner is a one-week project. First the old scanner is dismantled and the conveyor modifications needed for the new one are made. After the installation of the new log scanner, the testing phase begins, in which the scanner is calibrated and tested before moving into production use, says Stora Enso shift supervisor Lauri Vilhunen.
The project began back in January 2021. During the spring there was time to go through all the phases of the project in advance. Vilhunen gives credit to the Finnos representatives, who visited the site several times. The preparations and studies were done thoroughly, because every sawmill is unique. The product concept of the log scanner is good, in other words it is easy to place. Nevertheless, installing the scanner always requires good groundwork, as the necessary changes are made to existing functions.
The Finnos staff were very service-minded. Cooperation with them has gone well. They know their business and are customer-service oriented. Testing progressed quickly and the scanner was ready for use straight away. The schedule held well and the project progressed as planned. The customer can trust that things go as agreed. There were no surprises, Vilhunen sums up.
The installations went safely, on schedule and on budget. Safety is extremely important to Stora Enso, and this requirement was met throughout the project. The collaboration will certainly continue from here, since the experiences are this good, Lauri Vilhunen estimates.
