Finnos is striving to become the Google of the sawmill industry, and is well on its way already. Used to its full extent, the complete solution offered by Finnos is like a search engine that you can ask how you are doing. The newest addition to the product range on the market is the Board Scanner, which complements the information gathering and productivity of the sawing process.
From the sawmill industry's point of view, Finnos has often been perceived as a scanner house. And there are scanners, to be sure. In practice, however, Finnos is more of a software house.
"The physical scanning device is just a scanner that produces data. There is nothing magical about it. From the customer's point of view, the magic is in the software, which is intelligent enough to interpret the content of the data," says Development Director Juha Alatalo.
Moving along the sawing process, the newest scanning device Finnos has brought to market is the Board Scanner.
The board scanner images the boards from every side and searches the images for all the different defect types, such as knots, wane and so on. The board scanner is in practice a scanning device that images and grades transversely, without a turner.
"The engineers did not shut themselves in a booth to think about the device's features. The design started from responding to the customer's practical needs," describes Jyri Smagin.
A large group of Fin Scan core people is involved in developing the board scanner. There are decades of accumulated expertise and experience behind it. Our people understand what the scanner is used for at a sawmill, so that the best possible end result is guaranteed from the customer's point of view.
At Finnos, the needs of the sawmill are understood. In a nutshell, the goal is to achieve the maximum value yield from the sawmill's production. At a sawmill, what matters is that the right goods go into the right bin. No unnecessary or excessive trimming. As a rule, the sawmill gets a better price for better board quality, because cutting can be minimised with the information produced by the board scanner.
Log and board scanners use AI technology. AI has been used to create software in which, through object detection and image processing, the AI has been taught to look for various defects, knots and other features in the log that affect the sawing and quality of the log.
This is super high tech. Comparable AI-based software is hardly used yet for the benefit of the sawmill industry elsewhere in the world. Finnos has so far aimed the furthest in this, and got the furthest.
The Finnos strategy is to develop scanning equipment to support the sawmill's entire process. At its best, the whole is a comprehensive source of information and the best place for the user to see how the sawmill is really doing.
The Finnos Operations software consists of different modules. As a customer, the sawmill can use the parts it needs. If the customer decides to use the modules to their full extent, it essentially has the Google of the sawmill industry at its disposal, providing up-to-date information on productivity. In a word, Finnos provides the answer to how the sawmill is doing today.
