AI is an irreplaceable part of the products, because it gives Finnos systems a significant head start. But how do the AI systems actually work, and what do they do?
The following key stages of the sawline illustrate how we at Finnos use AI:
- Our log scanners are based on laser camera and X-ray scanning, which collects information from every log that passes through the scanner. This produces an enormous amount of data, which the AI system then processes. The AI combines the collected data and creates a unique fingerprint for every log (more about fingerprint technology later, keep an eye on our social media!). The most important benefit of AI is its speed, because without it the process would be too slow. At present our log scanners can handle 240 metres of log per minute. That is an absolutely incredible speed.
- The scanned log continues along the sorting line until it is kicked into the right bin. There is no need to wear out your own feet doing the kicking, because the AI system analyses the data collected during scanning and calculates a result for the log, on the basis of which it is neatly kicked into the right bin. Easy job.
- Once the log has found the right bin, splitting awaits. In reality it may be sawn into several pieces, because next up is production optimisation. The sawyer receives a virtual 3D image of every log, based on which the AI suggests how the log should be sawn to get the optimal benefit from it. The system makes sure that not a penny of the log goes unused.
- The log's journey ends here, but it leaves behind valuable end product. How much do the logs ultimately produce? The recovery rate of a batch can be measured with the Finnos board scanner. This next scanner in the line again uses AI, among other things to detect defects and to calculate the productivity of the production batch.
