Employee story

At the forefront of technology, one is constantly learning new things.

Product Manager Tapio Leppälampi works with artificial intelligence as the head of Finnos' AI team.

AI plays a significant role in the scanners of Finnos. AI technology enables, for example, the identification of wood species, detection of defects, and the individualization of logs, allowing the same log to be tracked through different stages of production.

– At the core of Finnos products is improving production efficiency and raw material utilization. Artificial intelligence is utilized in these areas, and there is plenty of interesting development to be done., Product Manager Tapio Leppälampi explains.

Leppälampi leads Finnos' AI team, which has broad expertise in areas such as neural network computation, machine vision, mathematical models, artificial intelligence, and learning systems. Tapio's typical workday includes a daily meeting with the team to check on each member's progress with their tasks, see if anyone needs help, or if they can move forward smoothly on their own.

The team lives in a world of continuous development. It is necessary to stay at the forefront of development, to constantly adopt new things, to plan for the future, and to go through data to have a sufficient basis for further development. The team receives data from customer-driven tests, which is monitored.

Our task is to plan for the future and develop a better AI world, which in practice means how data will be utilized in products going forward.

AI is continuous problem-solving

Tapio Leppälampi has been working at Finno since 2021. His history with the company actually extends further back, as Leppälampi began working in 2009 for a company that is now part of Finno. In between, Leppälampi took a short excursion elsewhere but returned to Finno. When we asked what motivates him in his work, Tapio gave a lengthy response.

A pleasant work community, teamwork, and the broad expertise of people are motivators for me. Best of all, you're constantly learning new things at the cutting edge of technology. AI is continuous problem-solving, and seeing solutions in practice is enjoyable. There are plenty of problems to solve, as new scanners have arrived and they produce new types of data that offer plenty to chew on., Tapio describes.

Many aspects of the various stages of sawmill processes are developed by humans, for example, regarding sorting rules. Artificial intelligence enables familiar models to be rethought and aims to improve material utilization.

Ideas into the air with a low threshold

Tapio Leppälampi considers Finnkino's work culture to be relaxed and appreciates the "can-do" attitude. He also considers it important that the company offers good opportunities for professional development, has flexible working hours, and allows for excellent remote work possibilities.

Innovativeness is also a sign of a developing work community.
Ideas can be thrown around with a low threshold, and they can also be put into practice. I can recommend Finno as a workplace to others as well. There are diverse tasks and opportunities for career advancement available here., Leppälampi says.
