Groupe Lebel's productivity rises to a new level with Finnos

Groupe Lebel has chosen Finnos as its partner for boosting quality yield in order to increase the productivity of its sawmill in Squatec, for the following reasons:

Reason 1: Advanced log sorting

With Finnos solutions, log sorting is so simple that it is practically automatic. Our scanners analyse everything about the logs, such as wood species and under-bark diameter, geometry, shape and internal quality. They also detect foreign objects stuck in the log. Now that all the information has been gathered, our tailored algorithms take care of the sorting.

Reason 2: Adaptation

Every project has some obstacles to overcome, and every customer has their own challenges. With Groupe Lebel, the challenge was geographical: our research and development takes place primarily in Finland, which is why our previous experience of the wood species of the Quebec region was close to zero. For this, thanks to our brilliant engineers, we had a plan! You see, we happen to have this almost trivial little tool called artificial intelligence, which takes care of species detection and many other things. So the basic principle of identifying a given species works; we just need to teach the machine with different kinds of data.

Reason 3: Green in, green out

And the other way round: when wood goes in, money comes out, and the more wood goes in, the more money comes out. Finnos is an expert in maximising returns: for example, our log scanners, equipped with countless sensors (X-ray, lasers, colour cameras and so on), can measure the log through and through, for example the under-bark diameter, knots and rotten areas. The measurements help you buy wood more transparently at any log reception, and also help in optimising sawing. Which is, once again, important for maximising returns.

Reason 4: Collaboration

Collaboration is the icing on the cake of our customer relationship. Streamlining the process and ensuring a smooth project takes collaboration. And the collaboration with Groupe Lebel has indeed gone very smoothly, thanks to mutual and thorough planning and preparation, both of which were started early. Thanks to this early planning phase, our customers can help us tailor our scanners to fit their needs. For Groupe Lebel, one such customisation was rot detection with end cameras, which is being developed, surprisingly enough, in collaboration with the customer.

All in all, we are already seeing promising results from Groupe Lebel's new log sorting line, and we are only just getting started.
