As a software developer, Essi Rautasalo uses mathematics and algorithms in her work so that the data produced by the log scanner can be used effectively for the customer's needs.
Essi Rautasalo works on the development side at Finnos, on the further processing of the data produced by the scanners. When a log passes through a Finnos scanner, an enormous amount of data is collected from it. Essi's task as a software developer is to work out how algorithms can be used to calculate the key results for each customer from this data. In this way the sawmill's raw material is put to use as efficiently as possible and waste is minimised. Solutions are often brainstormed and considered in the team, but the day-to-day work is largely done independently as remote work. The work of a software developer on the computation side includes maths, working with data and algorithms, testing, and searching for suitable computational methods.
"The best part of the work is solving challenging problems, alone and together. It is motivating to see how your own contribution turns into concrete benefit for the customer, and it is meaningful to be part of significant work in an important field. It is also great to have a support network of skilled people around you," Essi says.
The sawmill industry was an unfamiliar field for Essi before Finnos, but she has found a spark of interest in that too. Essi was introduced to the field thoroughly and has, for example, been able to visit a sawmill to see how log sorting works in practice.
Essi started at Finnos in 2018 as a summer employee. She heard about the job opportunity through LUT University, where she studied technomathematics and computational intelligence. After the summer job Essi stayed on at Finnos and now works as a full-time software developer.
Over five years at Finnos, Essi has seen how the company has grown and developed. According to Essi, Finnos stands out from the crowd as a pioneer in the field, and the company's greatest strength is openness.
"Just as in maths, this field requires openness and creativity. At Finnos we do not get stuck in traditional formulas. We are constantly looking for new ways to make use of the latest technology. We look at the big picture and move forward boldly with that in mind," Essi answers.
Finnos' success is also supported by a skilled team and a flexible work culture. The work culture encourages creativity. If you need peace and quiet, you get it. On the other hand, help is always available, and team members support each other. Solutions are often brainstormed together, but there is no need to stress about an endless round of meetings. Essi recommends Finnos to others as well.
"Here you get to do interesting work and learn new things. Because Finnos is at the forefront of development, working here also guarantees that you yourself do not fall behind technological development," Rautasalo says.
