Groupe Lebelin's productivity reaches a new level with Finnos

Groupe Lebel has chosen its sawmill in Squatec to increase productivity and has selected Finno as its quality yield-increasing partner for the following reasons:

Reason 1: Advanced log sorting

With Finnos solutions, log sorting is so simple it's practically automatic. Our scanners analyze all log-related information, such as species and diameter under bark, geometry, shape, and internal quality. They also detect foreign objects lodged in the logs. Now that all the data has been gathered, our customized algorithms take care of the sorting.

Reason 2: Adaptation

Every project has obstacles to overcome, and every client has their own challenges. With Groupe Lebel, the challenge was geographical: our research and development activities primarily take place in Finland, which is why our prior experience with Quebec wood species is close to zero. For this, we, thanks to our ingenious engineers, had a plan! We have a virtually negligible tool called artificial intelligence, which handles species detection and many other things. So, the basic principle of identifying a specific species works; we just need to teach the machine with different types of data.

Reason 3: What comes green, goes green.

I'd say the opposite: when you use wood, money comes in, and the more wood you use, the more money comes in. Finnos is an expert in maximizing profit: for example, our log scanners, equipped with countless sensors (X-ray, lasers, color cameras, etc.), can measure a log thoroughly, for instance, the diameter under the bark, branches, and rotten spots. The measurements help in purchasing wood more transparently at any receiving point and also in optimizing sawing. Which, once again, is important for maximizing profit.

Reason 4: Collaboration

Cooperation is the cherry on top, the raisin in the meatloaf of our customer relationship. Cooperation is needed to streamline the process and ensure a smooth project. Cooperation with Groupe Lebel has gone quite smoothly thanks to mutual and thorough planning and preparation, both initiated early. This early planning phase allows our customers to help us tailor our scanners to their needs. For Groupe Lebel, one such customization was rot detection with end cameras, which is – surprisingly – being developed in cooperation with the customer.

All in all, we are already seeing promising results from the new Groupe Lebel log sorting line, and we are just getting started.
