Finnos's Code School made a comeback

Television, remote-controlled car, washing machine, mobile phone. Coding has been needed in all of these. Through this, we started observing the environment and thinking about why coding is an important and useful skill. Nine 9-11-year-old children participated in Finnos's coding school in July 2019.

This year's coding bootcamp had an embedded systems programming theme. During the day, a software developer from Finnos provided Samu Tiaisnen The group was guided through coding theory. After that, small computers were built, which they got to program later that day. The goal of the programming was to make LED lights turn on with the press of a button.

”We need experts who can program low-level computers, meaning automation engineers. We started building responsibility by launching Coding School 2,” commented Jere Heikkinen, rector of Koodikoulu (also known as the CEO of Finnos).

The coding school was organized for the first time in the summer of 2018, with the theme being video game coding. The event received a lot of positive feedback at the time, so Finnos decided to continue the tradition.

Among the code school participants, satisfied looks could be observed as their own code began to work and the lights turned on. Some became enthusiastic about trying out their own solutions in addition to the examples done together, and they managed to make the lights blink at different speeds. It was a surprise to many how many lines of code are needed just to turn on a few lights.

Finally, the coding school students had a tournament using the computers they had built earlier in the day, testing reaction speed. The winners of the competition were awarded, and everyone received a certificate and a medal for participating in the coding school. In addition to the self-programmed computer they took home, they gained a lot of new knowledge and skills, and perhaps a spark to continue coding in the future.
