The latest Finoc log scanner was installed at Stora Enso's Varkaus sawmill at the end of August. It was a matter of replacing an old log scanner with a new one. The previous scanner was already 20 years old, and now it was time to invest in modern technology and update the scanner for this millennium.
Stora Enso has previously received five Fusion log scanners and EROP operator chairs for sawmills such as Uimaharju and Honkalahti. In Varkaus, the Finnos log scanner was chosen because experiences with previous scanners had been good.
The benefits of a log scanner are easy to demonstrate. Economic significance is the most important factor. Primarily, Stora Enso sought improved utilization with the scanner upgrade, meaning a better profit margin for operations.
Furthermore, the information generated by log scanners can also be used to reduce waste. The X-ray scanner also performs strength grading, so added value is created for the final product right from the log sorting stage.
From an installation perspective, a new log scanner is a week-long project. First, the old scanner will be dismantled, and the necessary conveyor modifications will be made for the new one. After the new log scanner is installed, the testing phase will begin, during which the scanner will be calibrated and tested before it moves into production use, says Stora Enso's shift supervisor Lauri Vilhunen.
The project began back in January 2021. During the spring, there was time to go through all the project phases in advance. Vilhunen commends the Finnos representatives who visited the site several times. The preliminary preparations and investigations were done properly, as the saws are unique. The product concept for the log scanner is good, meaning it can be easily placed. However, installing the scanner always requires good groundwork, as the necessary modifications are made to existing functions.
Finnos's staff was very helpful. Cooperation with them has gone well. They know their stuff and are customer-service oriented. The testing proceeded quickly and the scanner was immediately ready for use. The schedule was kept well and the project progressed as planned. The customer can trust that things will go as agreed. There were no surprises, Vilhunen summarizes.
The installations proceeded safely, on schedule, and within budget. Safety is very important to Stora Enso, and this requirement was met throughout the project. Cooperation will surely continue from here on, as the experiences have been so good, assesses Lauri Vilhunen.
